Fight the tech posture with physio training

What is a “text neck”?

It is a recently developed term to describe the symptoms associated with overuse of electronic devices, particularly our smartphones.
This leads to a repetitive stress injury to the neck caused by having your head in a forward position for extended period.
The forward pending posture affects the curvature of the cervical spine, the neck and the shoulder muscles, and supporting ligaments.

What are the symptoms?

  • Sharp or nagging pain in the neck and shoulders
  • Stiffness/tightness in shoulders and neck leading to decreased range of motion
  • Intermittent or constant headaches
  • Tingling and numbness in the upper limbs
  • Eye pain and dizziness

What to do?

  • Hold the device at eye level when possible
  • Take frequent breaks
  • Exercise regularly. Strength and flexibility of the back and neck have been shown to
better tolerate extra stress on the spine
  • Check with your physiotherapist to develop a treatment plan and a training program to
    meet your specific needs
